Use a blend shape trigger when something should follow a shape that already moves: a blush that grows with the smile a gesture plays, or eyes that glow while an angry face is on. The shape can be moved by a gesture, face tracking, a toggle of yours, or an animation that Modular Avatar or VRCFury adds.

Add a trigger with + Trigger, then set When to A blendshape is animated. Only Advanced mode adds triggers.

The settings in the order the panel shows them. The name, Only while and the effect sections work as on every trigger.

Shown in: Simple and Advanced · Default: Another toggle · Choices: A blendshape is animated for a blend shape trigger

A blend shape trigger keeps When even with requirements, since its shape is not a condition. Switching to another source turns the requirements into the trigger's conditions, with the new source first.

Shown in: Simple and Advanced · Default: none picked · Choices: blend shapes of this avatar's meshes

The shape the trigger follows. The button shows the mesh and the shape, such as Face › Smile. Press it to pick another shape from a list with a search field.

A shape that VRChat moves itself for blinking or lip sync cannot be followed, since no animation moves it, and a warning says so.

Shown in: Simple and Advanced · Default: none · Choices: up to three, each a toggle, a parameter, a contact or a PhysBone

The shape is the first row of a group captioned All of. + And in that group adds a requirement. While any requirement fails, the effects rest. While all of them hold, the shape moves the effects. The group holds the shape and up to three requirements, and there is no + Or. Only while counts as one more requirement.

A group left over from before shows under the caption Kept but not used. Its conditions are kept but not read, and a warning says so.

Shown in: Simple and Advanced · Default: Smooth · Choices: Smooth, Switch

  • Smooth blends the blend shapes and material values in as the shape moves, from Starts at to Fully on at. Objects and material slots cannot blend, so they switch at Swaps at.
  • Switch turns every effect fully on once the shape reaches Switch at, and off again when it drops back.

Shown in: Simple and Advanced, in the Smooth style · Default: 0 · Range: 0 to 100

The shape's weight where the effects start to come in.

Shown in: Simple and Advanced, in the Smooth style · Default: 100 · Range: 0 to 100

The shape's weight where the effects are fully on. When it is not higher than Starts at, the effects are fully on right after Starts at, and a warning says so.

Shown in: Simple and Advanced, in the Smooth style · Default: 50 · Range: 0 to 100

The shape's weight where objects switch and material slots swap.

Shown in: Simple and Advanced, in the Switch style · Default: 50 · Range: 0 to 100

The shape's weight where the whole trigger switches on. It is the same setting as Swaps at, named for what it moves in each style.

Shown in: Simple and Advanced · Default: Add · Choices: Add, Replace

What happens to the followed shape itself:

  • Add lets the shape move as its own animations say, with the effects on top.
  • Replace takes the shape out of every FX animation that moves it. The shape stays at rest and only the effects show, still following where the shape would have been. A Replace trigger with no effect it can build keeps the shape's animation, and says so.

Shown in: Simple and Advanced · Default: Objects, empty · Choices: Objects, Blendshapes, Materials, Properties

A blend shape row offers Fixed weight, the default, which goes from the shape's rest to the row's Weight as the trigger comes on, or Follow source, which copies the followed shape times Multiplier and keeps the result between 0 and 100. Blend shape rows describes them. A property row blends from its rest to its value the same way.

There is no Follows section, since the trigger has no plain on and off for a follow. A row for the followed shape itself is ignored, with a warning.

The row has no buttons. It says which shape the trigger follows in the scene. When a toggle of yours moves that shape, preview the toggle with On, and the Scene view shows the trigger's effects follow.

At upload, after Modular Avatar and VRCFury have added their animations, AvatarDoc copies the shape's weight into a hidden value in every FX animation that moves the shape. The hidden value is named after the parameter prefix, Shape and the trigger's name, such as AD/Shape/Smile blush. It is not an expression parameter, so it costs no synced bits: every player's copy of your avatar works it out from the same animations.

The trigger gets one layer of its own, named AD: and the trigger's name with (shape) after it, placed after everything Modular Avatar and VRCFury add. When the effects come to rest, and when the avatar loads, it sets their shapes and properties back to rest once, unless another layer owns them. While the effects rest, it leaves every shape and property to whatever else moves them, and never holds a shape VRChat blinks or speaks with. When an effect moves one of those shapes, VRChat's blinking or lip sync pauses while the effects are on.

The Builds line reads, for example, Builds: 1 FX layer, blends from 0 to 100, a hidden copy of the shape's weight, no synced bits.

Only animations in the FX layer reach the trigger. When the shape also moves in the Gesture, Action or Additive layer, a warning names those animations. VRChat's own proxy animations cannot be changed, so the trigger does not follow the shape while one plays.
