Fit in VRChat's parameter memory

When to use this
Section titled “When to use this”VRChat gives each avatar 256 bits of synced parameter memory, shared by everything on the avatar. A synced toggle uses 1 bit, a radial uses 8. Use this page when the memory bar is nearly full, or when AvatarDoc says the parameters do not fit.
To leave entries out of one platform without changing the parameters, see Different setups for PC and Quest.
This needs Advanced mode, the default.
Read the memory bar
Section titled “Read the memory bar”-
In the Hierarchy, select the object that holds your AvatarDoc component.
-
In the inspector's header, look at the memory bar.
The light part is the synced bits of the avatar and its other tools, and the green part is what AvatarDoc adds. The text under the bar names both, such as Avatar 2 bits and AvatarDoc 17 bits, and says how many bits are free, such as 237 of 256 bits free. When the avatar is over, it says by how many bits, and AvatarDoc's part turns red.
-
In the tree, select an entry, such as a radial.
Its Builds line, under its name, says how many synced bits it adds.
-
In its panel, open the Advanced fold.
Beside Synced, you should now see what the entry costs: +1 bit, +8 bits or 0 bits.
In the picture, 1 is the memory bar, 2 the text under it, 3 the Builds line of the Smile radial, and 4 the cost beside Synced.
What costs synced bits
Section titled “What costs synced bits”| What | Synced bits |
|---|---|
| A toggle | 1 |
| A radial | 8 |
| An exclusive group | 8 for the whole group, however many toggles it has |
| A declared parameter | 1 for a Bool, 8 for an Int or a Float |
| A trigger, an override, a preset or a merged animator | 0 of its own |
An entry with Synced off costs nothing. Saved costs nothing either: it only remembers the state between avatar loads.
Free some bits
Section titled “Free some bits”-
In the tree, select a toggle that other players do not need to see.
-
In its panel, open the Advanced fold.
-
In the fold, untick Synced.
The toggle then changes only for you. Its cost turns to 0 bits, and the memory bar shrinks.
-
In the panels of toggles where only one is on at a time, put them in one exclusive group, as in Make one-of-many choices.
A group costs 8 bits however many toggles it has, so it saves bits once it has more than eight toggles.
-
In the panel of a toggle the avatar came with and that you never use, turn on Remove from avatar, as in Remove things from the avatar.
Its parameter leaves the avatar when nothing else needs it, and the memory bar shrinks by its bits. Turning In menu off frees nothing.
A toggle in an exclusive group has no Synced switch of its own: its fold says Group saved and synced, because the group's parameter is always saved and synced.
Check it worked
Section titled “Check it worked”- The text under the memory bar says how many bits are free.
- Press Summary in the header. The summary says how many synced bits this component adds, and how many AvatarDoc uses on the avatar in total.
If it does not work
Section titled “If it does not work”- An error says the synced parameters need more bits than VRChat allows: the upload stops until the avatar fits. Free bits as in the steps. See the message.
- A warning says the same, and that VRCFury compresses the parameters: with VRCFury installed, the upload goes on and VRCFury makes the parameters smaller. See the message.
- The light part of the bar is large: those are parameters the avatar or other tools declare, not AvatarDoc's. Remove things from the avatar can free the avatar's own.
Related
Section titled “Related”- Parameters, sync and memory explains synced bits in more detail.
- Troubleshooting covers the upload that stops over the limit.
- Limits lists VRChat's limits that AvatarDoc checks.
